Breakfasts with a Boost

Breakfasts Matter - Change your Breakfast, Change your Life

I recently spent a few days as a wellness practitioner at a corporate wellness event in Oakland.  I got to talk to a lot of people about how they personally can reach their wellness goals and how I can contribute to a corporate wellness program for their company.

A lot of the folks I talked with at the event report that they struggle with creating time to eat healthy breakfast in the morning. This often leads to them eating a pastry and a cup of coffee, a bowl of cereal or even worse, nothing at all.

Starting the day off with a sugar bomb sky-rockets the blood sugar, leading to an energy crash. Abstaining from breakfast is signaling to the body to be in conservation mode, which tends to slow the metabolism therefore making it more difficult to lose weight.

Open Water Swim Clinic Reflections

Ocean Water Swimming

I am a water person. My mom swam laps every day when I was in utero. I grew up in Maine in the lakes region knowing that there was always a place to hop in the water. Summers were spent at the beach (lake) and every year we would go to Hilton Head Island, SC for a few weeks. There I got to have the luxury of endless hours in the warm ocean (vs the Maine ocean where swimming was more like forcing yourself to stay in long enough to get numb, paddle around and head in).

Hilton Head is where I got really comfortable in the water. My entire family and I would body surf, swim, get tossed around, ground up and spit out by big waves. Then we would build epic sand castles and eat a lot of watermelon and the best peaches in the world.

She.is.Beautiful 10K Race Report

Race Report She.is.Beautiful 10k Race, March 17, 2013, Santa Cruz, CA

I’m a destination race junky, meaning that I prefer to run my races in other places as a way to get out of town, have a little vacation, see somewhere new. This year I decided to do a local Santa Cruz 10K because last year I volunteered for it and was inspired by the message of the race.

The mantra at She.Is.Beautiful: "I believe in sweating everyday. I believe running with your friends is better than therapy. I believe the happy girls are the beautiful girls. I believe strong is pretty."

I believe this, too.

My training for this race was a little different than most of my running races. The last time I ran 6 miles was on Thanksgiving, however I have been in a Nu2Tri triathlon training group, so my overall training has changed dramatically. I do much less running, but am consistently doing either running, biking, swimming or yoga 6 days a week.

Losing Weight While You Sleep

Posted on February 25, 2013

Did you know how much you sleep and the quality of that sleep play a role in your body's ability to lose weight? Many of our hormones are affected by our sleep, including two that affect your appetite: leptin and ghrelin.

They work together to control feelings of huger and fullness. Ghrelin, which is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates appetite, while leptin, produced in fat cells, sends a signal to the brain when you are full.

If you don't get enough sleep, the result is lower leptin levels making you not as satisfied after you eat. This lack of sleep also causes the ghrelin levels to be higher, stimulating your appetite and making you want to eat more.  As you can see, this is a recipe for overeating. Other factors such as exercise patterns, stress levels, dietary habits, and genetics may play a role in production and response of these hormones.

XCountry Ski Birthday Trip

Posted on January 29, 2013

My 31st birthday in pictures! I spent 3 days with my mom, aunt and friend cross country skiing in the Maine woods. We stayed at the Maine Huts and Trails Flagstaff Lake Hut for two nights and spent the days skiing around. The huts are off the grid and provide hot meals, a beautiful common room with a fire place and cozy bunk rooms.

Here I am on the morning of my birthday! We skied in 2 miles with our overnight packs.

My mom Martha, my mom's college roommate Marty, and my aunt Peg. These women are incredible, adventurous, wise and fun! (Two years ago we all hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon).

It was really cold - it ranged from 7-27 degrees over the 3 days.

Road Bike Ride #1: Feeling Free

Nu2Tri Program -- Road Bike Ride #1: Feeling Free

Today I had my first group ride with the triathlon club. It was my first real ride on a road bike. I have to admit that I was a little nervous. Scared that I might be really slow, have a major wipe out, get a flat and not know how to fix it. This is precisely why I joined Nu2Tri – because it’s totally ok to show up and be slow, crash, to not know. The team of leaders and mentors are there to make sure you aren’t left behind in any way.

Dirty Dozen and Cleanest 12: Be choosy with produce

Organic vs Conventional Produce

If you are what you eat, it's important to be choosy about the quality of what you eat.  Every thing we put in our bodies becomes the building blocks of our cells, tissues, bones, systems and plays a role in our overall health and how we feel.

The produce section of at the grocery store provides us option of conventionally and organically grown foods.  As plants grow, they suck up the nutrients and substances from the soil. Most large-scale farming relies on chemicals to produce large crop yields, and their practices have depleted the soil of many of the natural minerals and nutrients, leaving the produce full of pollutants and agrochemicals. Some of the health risks associated with high consumption of these toxins are cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, hormone disruption and ADHD in children.

10 Tools to Lose Stubborn Weight

The simple formula to lose weight used to be boiled down to calories in, calories out. Research has now proven it’s not so simple and anyone struggling with stubborn weight that just won’t go away can attest that the formula is much more complicated.

Today I am going to share with you 10 things you can do to help your body release weight. These ideas will positively contribute to the body as a holistic being.

Don't try these all at once...consider gradually adding these ideas into your life. For the best results of making change, you'll need accountability to stick to your goals. If you are ready for someone to keep you on track, consider setting up a complimentary initial consultation with me to find out more about health coaching.

Marsh Madness Half Marathon

Palo Alto Marsh Madness Half Marathon * Race Report

10/27/12

I’ve run a handful of half marathons – enough that they have lost the allure of being a big deal. This has pros and cons – I know I can slack on my training and still complete the race feeling good. A trust in my strength and body has grown from steady conditioning and building my milage over the last several years. I am still a slow runner, but I know that I can keep going if I need to!

My friend Julia, yoga teacher extraordinaire, joined me for this race (she ran the 10k). We drove up on this sunny day to Palo Alto – just “over the hill” from Santa Cruz.  The race started late…which is mildly annoying but at least I had time to down a small cup of coffee and pee.

Here we are before the race.
